An important part of art is the ability to visual communicate information. Some may argue that with art the means is more important than the message. This is far too often the case with secondary image making. But in graduate school we find a major shift; students focus primarily on the message and often the means is a footnote. It’s all about the message i.e., government surveillance, the politics of personal choice, corruptions of corporate leaders, etc. The adjective interdisciplinary, means “to combine academic studies or disciplines”. There is a legitimate fear of interdisciplinary activity between art and other courses in art education. A colleague of mine once filled a stint as an elementary art teacher. The history teacher was outraged that he would not provide his time and effort to help her pupils make pilgrim hats out of construction paper. The state standards for art education discuss methods and materials, and critical thinking, but how they maneuver within the interdisciplinary realm is a matter of judgment. |
