Picking the Right College & Post Secondary Educational Opportunities
art-school
Lecture: Get an Education not just a Degree.
ASSIGNMENT:
Option 1: Attend a National Portfolio Day and interview with a minimum of two schools.
Option 2: College visit & report.

LECTURE NOTES:
  • Research: Internet Resources. Talk to a graduate who is working in your field of interest. Review the College Blue Book (Media Center).
  • Keep a college folder:  Pick 3-5 colleges that you are interested in applying to. Use a folder for each college in which you will keep a collection of any and all information pertaining to application. Each folder must include the following printed information: (1) Admission requirements, i.e.: education, SAT’s, GPA, activities, portfolio, etc. (2) Portfolio requirements, i.e.: self-portraits, drawing from life, color and design, etc. (3) Location of college, i.e.: state, city, commute from home, etc. (4) Size of college, i.e.: small, medium, large, etc. (5) Tuition, i.e.: estimated family contribution, financial aid, loans, scholarships, etc. (6) Programs and training offered, i.e.: fashion design, architecture, graphic design, etc. Contact information, i.e.: office of admissions, dean of admissions, financial aid office, etc.
  • Question to ask yourself: Questions to ask yourself about a college: academic standards, financial aid, costs, proximity to museums/galleries or commercial art centers, quality of faculty, quality of student work. Remember large programs have more electives. Large Universities offer numerous support courses. For example: Ceramics, (Ceramics, Metals, Wood & Stone, Throwing 1-3, Hand 1-3, etc). Printmaking (Lithography 1-3, Intaglio 1-3, Serigraphy, etc.) Unfortunately many Universities have resorted to hiring graduate students to teach these courses to save money. Small colleges may only offer one printmaking course a year and don’t have the option to hire graduate students. Typically smaller colleges hire fewer Adjunct Professors, meaning you will see faculty members on campus more frequently and can ask for assistance. The instructors may fill diverse shoes, similar to what your high school art teachers do, thus they may not be teaching in the specialty area. Non degree art schools are a total submersion into methods and materials. These trade schools have the disadvantage of the guild mentality, but the advantage of allowing the student to focus all their time on their craft.
  • Reflective Essay: A requirement for admission to most colleges is a written essay based on student experience and knowledge. To help facilitate the writing of this essay you will create an essay based on the following topic: "Why have you chosen fine arts as a course of study in the millennium?" Your essay must be at least 500 words and no more than 800 words. It is important that you display your creative ability through this essay so that the admissions committee can make an accurate decision as to your admission to their fine arts school.
